IL CPA Renewal Requirements

The state of Illinois

  • License renewal period every 3 years.
  • 120 hours each renewal period.

  • Taxation
  • Management services
  • Computer sciences
  • Mathematics, statistics, probability, and quantitative applications to organization

  • Business, securities and administrative law
  • Business management and employee benefits
  • Professional ethics for certified public accountants
  • Auditing public or private sector specialized industries
  • Administrative practice; e.g., engagement letters, fee structure and personnel management
  • Effective presentation techniques
  • Professional Writing
  • Decision Making
  • Practice development
  • Ethics

No less than 4 hours shall be courses covering the subject of professional ethics.

Please note

  • Courses must be taken from an approved sponsor, including:
    • American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA);
    • The Illinois CPA Society/Foundation (ICPAS/F);
    • A university or college approved by its governing board in the State of Illinois
    • The National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA)
    • Course Sponsors approved by other states or other state CPA societies
  • In no case shall credit for correspondence or individual study courses, other than an interactive self-study course, be given for more than 60 hours during any renewal period.

    In addition, not more than 80 hours during any renewal period may consist of a combination of interactive self-study and correspondence or individual study courses.

  • Each approved CPE course or program hour shall include, as a minimum, 50 minutes of actual class time, which equals one CPE course credit hour.
  • Any licensed CPA whose license/registration expired while on active duty with the US Armed Forces or the State Militia may have his/her license/registration renewed, reinstated, or restored without paying any lapsed renewal and restoration fees if said situation/evidence is furnished to the Illinois Dept. within 2 years of honorable termination.
